Friday Flicks: It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

Those who know me well have probably wondered why I haven’t mentioned this movie already. But then again, they may just be sick of hearing about it from me, and are glad I haven’t. :D

But seriously, if you were to ask me what my favorite movie of all time would be, I would tell you, “I don’t really know.” But I would follow that up by saying that “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” would definitely be in my top 10. And it’s a great movie for a summertime Friday Night Flick…

There are so many things I’d like to tell you about this flick, but frankly, it’d just take too long. The stunts, the background, the cast, particular scenes – I just couldn’t do it. Suffice it to say that it was the inspiration for the dramatic musical production Leona and I created a few years ago called, “One Mad Christmas.” That should tell you something, right there.

Now here are some things to keep in mind about this movie:

  • You must watch it in a “wide screen” version. Really. It’s not optional.
  • This is a long movie that includes an intermission. It moves along at a steady pace, however, so fear not.
  • I personally like the longest version of this movie, but you may have trouble finding it.
  • If you have kiddos, it’s important to know that there are some fight scenes and a couple of curse words like “h-e-double hockey sticks.”
  • There’s a scene that includes a 60′s chick in a 60′s bikini. Just so you know.
  • It includes an “all star cast” and cameos galore from the biggest names in comedy at the time. You may or may not recognize them, but if you do, it will greatly add to the fun of watching it.
  • Do not confuse this movie with the movie, “Rat Race.” I haven’t seen that flick, but my understanding is, there is no comparison.
  • Jonathan Winters single handedly destroys a gas station in one scene. With gas prices as they are today, I just thought I’d mention that. :P

Here’s a “fan made trailer” I found on YouTube that I think captures the flavor of the movie pretty well:

One more thing. “It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World” premiered in 1963, but believe it or not, there is actually a sequel to this movie in the works. It’s hard for me to imagine it being anything but terrible, but here’s hoping…

Well, from the looks of this post, it seems I took too long, anyway. :D But as always, if you watch it because you read about it in a “Friday Flicks” feature, I’d love to hear about it.

Friday Flicks: “Duel”

Duel” is one of those movies that is visually told, fun to watch, and hard to get out of your head. It is also the first “real” movie ever directed by a young, promising director by the name of Steven Spielberg.

Starring Dennis Weaver and the unnamed, unseen driver of a freaky 18 wheeler, “Duel” debuted in 1971 and set the stage for Spielberg’s career. It’s fun to watch because as with all great suspense movies, it causes you to constantly think about what you would do in the same situation.

If you get the collector’s edition, be sure to watch the short documentaries featuring Spielberg talking about this movie. He believes that without “Duel,” there would have been no “Jaws.”

A few fun bits of trivia:

1. You can see Spielberg’s reflection in a phone booth window in one scene.
2. The main character drives a Plymouth Valiant. I drove a Plymouth Valiant in college. His is orange. Mine was sort of a creme color with a green interior. His has no name. Mine was called the “Gray Poupon.” 8)

If you use Netflix, you can find the movie here.

Oh, and don’t watch the trailer first. The trailer is awful and will make you not want to watch it.

Turn down the lights, grab a snack and remember that this was made in the days before cell phones. And as with any “Friday Flick” I mention here, if you watch it, let me know your thoughts about it…

Friday Flicks: “Safety Last!”

“Friday Flicks” is an experimental feature I’m adding to my blog on …Fridays. 8)

I’ll add info on upcoming movies and other entertainment media from time to time, but the main focus will be recommending a video to watch over the weekend. Generally, I’ll be pointing you to classic flicks and “change of pace” kind of movies rather than just the latest “new releases.”

The format for this feature may change a bit over the next few weeks, but let’s go ahead and get started and we’ll work it out and have fun with it as we go…

This Friday’s Flick: “Safety Last!”

You’ve probably never seen this, but you really should see this. Harold Lloyd’s “Safety Last!” is a silent film from 1923 that works on so many levels even today. In fact, there were scenes in this movie that had my kids saying things like, “Whoa! No Way!” and literally laughing out loud along the way.

Harold Lloyd himself was an amazing individual. He was known for his “can do” spirit, and literally did not let anything stop him from achieving his goals. Before this movie was filmed, he was in a freak accident involving what he thought was a prop bomb during a publicity shoot. It turned out to be a real bomb (like in the cartoons -bowling ball with a fuse) and it blew off the thumb and forefinger of his right hand! Lloyd made “Safety Last!” (ironically) with a prosthetic hand that fit over his real hand.

I think one of the reasons I like Harold Lloyd is because he reminds me of church planters. He was up to the challenge and didn’t let obstacles get in his way! :)

“Safety Last” is a great example of how to tell a story visually, which is probably why audiences in this highly visual century still enjoy it so much today. And as a communicator, it’s a great reminder to me of how important and powerful visuals can be.

Watch this movie with the lights down, a big bowl of popcorn, and marveling at the fact that this was light years before CGI. They did a few camera angle tricks, but he really is that high in the air.

Find it at Netflix on disc one of the “Harold Lloyd Comedy Collection.

I think it’s an all time classic. If you watch it based on my “Friday Flicks” recommendation, by the way, I would love to hear about it! (Even if you didn’t like it.)

Just Checking In…

A few highlights from the past couple of weeks…

- Matthew and Melissa returned home from a great week at World Changers.

- Michael went water skiing/tubing with Keystone.  Maybe I should say he tried to water ski – he never really got out of the water… :)

- Our home air conditioning went kaput this week. The fan motor locked up, and probably needs to be replaced. We have the windows open and plenty of other fans going until we can get it fixed. Our house now feels like a summer open air cabin on the beach. …Except we are in Fort Worth, Texas, it’s really hot and there’s no beach. :)

- Leona broke her tooth.

- On the way to the dentist, Leona had a flat tire.

- I changed the flat tire for Leona, the damsel in distress. :) No sense in her getting all mussed up on her way to the dentist. :P

- We watched the 1956 classic, “The Searchers” this week. Amazing cinematography, and a story that flips sterotypes, racial prejudices, and notions of “good guys and bad guys” on their heads. Not bad for a John Wayne flick from the ’50′s.

- I’ve spent a lot of extra time polishing up our musical, “One Mad Christmas,” and making the preview files and performance license and contract available. We’ve had a number of inquiries about it and there have been quite a few searches for “dramatic musicals” around here, lately, so I thought I’d freshen things up a bit.

And in other news, Leona and I have been praying about Compass and the restart, and if the vision and strategy will actually be accomplished in the manner and time-frame we originally thought. Is it possible that the vision might be fulfilled by me leading another church in the area to see it become a reality? We’re not sure.

No, we’re not in conversations with another church, but we are far more open to that as a possibility than we have ever been before. If the plan changes, we’ll let you know. Just trying to keep it real, here, folks.

Lord of the Mood Swings

As 2006 drew to a close, this scene from “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” described my mood quite well.

Today my mood is more like a combination of Gandalf and Theodin in this scene from “Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.” (To about 4:10 or so, anyway)

Makes me think of Psalm 30:4-5.

It’s also nice and sunny in Fort Worth, today…

New Star Trek Movie – “Lost” in Space?

Up until about 2 months ago, my kids had never seen “Star Trek.” No “Next Generation,” no “Deep Space Nine,” no “Voyager,” no “Star Trek: Enterprise,” and none of the movies. Heck, I haven’t even seen the last few Star Trek movies, myself. But recently, the original Star Trek returned to our T.V. stations, and it has made for some pretty fun family time.

We’re talking Kirk, Spock, McCoy and Scotty. The classic. The original. My favorite.

kirk_spock-grayframe.jpg

The show my own family watched over supper when I was a kid. The show from which Leona’s mom never could quote lines correctly. Like the time she was trying to quote Kirk’s famous line, “Beam me up, Scotty!” and instead she used the unfortunate expression, “Spark me up, Bob!” Hilarious.

But before they even knew what “Star Trek” was, my kids saw Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” video, with the line, “The only question I ever thought was hard was ‘Do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?’” And before they knew who Spock was, they saw the horrifying video of Leonard Nimoy singing the “Ballad of Bilbo Baggins.” Strangely, that may have actually piqued their interest in seeing the show.

So it’s been fun seeing my kids discover the fun of that original series- with the great relationships of the characters, the quirkiness of the sets and costumes and the fun, quotable lines.

Not too long ago, we even watched the T.V. episode that set up who “Khan Noonien Singh” was and then watched the movies, “The Wrath of Khan,” “The Search For Spock” and “The Journey Home” in order. Hmm….”White and Nerdy” is kind of stuck in my head, now.

But I’m really not a Trekker.

And I wouldn’t even think about attending a Star Trek Convention. (If you click on the link, be warned that there are a couple of mild curse words in the video.)

But I am really looking forward to the new Star Trek movie that is in the works with a scheduled release for December 25, 2008  May 8, 2009.

star-trek-sm.jpg

And I’m very glad to hear that it is being produced and directed by J.J. Abrams, creator of the T.V. shows, “Alias” and “Lost.” Simply titled, “Star Trek,” the story will involve the original characters’ first adventure together.

The movie, “Lost in Space” was pretty bad. But the creator of “Lost,” in “space,” directing a new Kirk and crew could be a good thing if it means a great story with great action and great characters.

According to Abrams (via Entertainment Weekly):

“It’s a story that even non-Trekkers can enjoy. ”On the one hand, for people who love Star Trek, the fix that they will get will be really satisfying,” he says. ”For people who’ve never seen it or know it vaguely, I think they will enjoy it equally, because the movie does not require you to know anything about Star Trek. I would actually prefer [that] people don’t know the series, because I feel like they will come to it with an open mind.”

Now for a twist:
Don’t stretch this too much. But if you change the words “story” and “movie” to “service,” the word, “non-Trekkers” to “lost people” and the words “Star Trek” to “the Gospel” in this quote, suddenly it describes a pretty cool church service…

Whoa.

Beam Spark me up, Scotty Bob.
