Wednesday Weigh-In #8

Well, after a brief hiatus from the old Wednesday Weigh-in, I was pretty nervous about stepping on the scales. But I must say that when I did today, the numbers were a total surprise….

The Weigh-In:

2 weeks ago: 208 pounds
This week: 200 pounds!! (I thought stress caused you to GAIN weight! But I guess I have been eating less and exercising more over the past two weeks….)

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 or 8 pack:

2 weeks ago: 41 inches 1/2 inches
This week: 40 1/2 inches (Just a reminder: I’m measuring my midsection, not my waist. I’m pretty amazed that I lost an inch! Time to start really working those abs!)

So, to bring things up to date since I started this in May, and also because it’s extremely motivating to me, here are the stats in perspective:

First weigh-in, 5-16-07: Weight: 211 pounds | Midsection: 45 3/4 inches
Progress as of today: Weight: 200 pounds | Midsection: 40 1/2 inches
Totals Lost: Weight: 11 pounds | Midsection: 5 1/4 inches

Nothing like a little good news to brighten one’s day… :D

Wednesday Weigh-In #6

Well what do you know, it’s actually on a Wednesday, this time!

The Weigh-In:

Last week: 209 pounds
This week: 208 pounds (That was one pound that was stinking hard to lose…)

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 or 8 pack:

Last week: 41 1/2 inches
This week: 41 inches ( Not sure about this one. It’ll take 2 or 3 inches to convince me that I’m getting an accurate measurement, here. …But I’ll still celebrate 1/2 an inch or so!)

This week’s inspiration:

Wednesday Weigh-In #5

The Weigh-In:

Last week: 209 pounds
This week: 209 pounds (Well, at least I’m balanced! :D )

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 or 8 pack:

Last week: 42 1/8 inches
This week: 41 1/2 inches! (Woo hoo! At least there’s circumference progress! :P )

Mostly adjusted eating habits this week. Exercise still eludes and taunts me… :?

Wednesday (or so) Weigh-In #4

The weigh-In:
Last week: 209 (I’m guessing, here, because of last week’s schedule.)
This week: 209 (I could have gained a pound last week, then lost a pound this week…)

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 0r 8 pack:
Last week: 42 3/4 (Using the headphone cable and ruler)
This week: 42 1/8 (Using measuring tape. I guess the headphone cable and ruler were pretty accurate!)

I’m guessing that most of you couldn’t care less about these “weigh-in” posts, and I can’t say I blame you. I understand. You may be asking things like: “What about Compass Church? What’s the countdown strategy? How about more Church Planting stuff? What about the Worship Series? Etc.?… Etc.?” But believe me, you’ll be hearing more than you ever wanted to about all of that soon enough, I promise you. :)

I’m just posting these very slim stats (pun intended) here for my own accountability. It just puts it out there and keeps it in front of me.

And looking back over them, it’s a little stunning to see where I am four weeks after announcing I was doing something about my personal fitness. It’s also convicting to look over the posts and see the number of times I’ve said something like “Now it’s time to get serious about this.” When I read that on my own blog it becomes obvious that I’ve only given it marginal effort. The stats make that clear. It’s a public, personal kick in the pants.

But – It is also stunning to see that with even the smallest amount of intentionality, I’ve made some progress. And I’m making more realistic lifestyle changes that are likely to become my long-term way of life.

I heard recently that basically there are three factors that affect our health: Genetics, Environment, and Behavior. You can’t do a lot about genetics, you can do a little bit about your environment, but you can do a LOT about your behavior. It’s the one that points directly to our personal choices more than anything.

Now if you know me, you know that I am not a health food nut by any stretch of the imagination, nor am I striving to become one. (Notice the cake in the last post :) ) But some major adjustments are necessary and I do want to be a good steward of this body that I’ve been given. I can’t over-spiritualize the command to “present my body” as a “spiritual or reasonable act of worship.” And that starts with a renewing of my mind, reflecting a new set of better choices.

I don’t want to worship my body (gross), I want to worship God with my body – as well as I can for as long as I can. It’s actually a spiritual discipline and reflects the spiritual fruit of self-control. That alone is a motivator for me.

So I’ll keep posting the weekly “Get Fit” updates and the things I’m doing as I go. It’s a way to keep me on track, and maybe inspire you to move in a similar direction.

[By the way, the American Heart Association has some great information, tips and tools for a good starting point.]

Wednesday Weigh-In #3

The Weigh-in:
Today’s “weigh-in” took place at Leona’s folks’ house in Oklahoma.  Unfortunately, the scales used today were inaccurate and faulty scales can really mess you up.  So I have no accurate weight numbers to announce today.

That is, unless I really did gain 11 pounds since last Wednesday.  Um…no.

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 or 8 pack:
Last week:  45 1/2 inches
This week:  42 3/4  inches – Woo hoo!  But then again, I had to use a headphone cable and a ruler to make my measurement… :)

It has been a hard week for this stuff, though, I must say.  Visiting with my parents, visiting with Leona’s parents,  celebrating an anniversary and celebrating a birthday has meant cakes, sweets and extra opportunities for over doing it.

All things considered, I think I did “o.k. ” Now it’s time to do better than “o.k.”

Wednesday Weigh-In #2

D’oh! I missed the weigh-in, yesterday…

Here are the ugly stats:

The weigh-in:
Last week: 209 lbs.
This week: 209 lbs.! (no change)

Woo hoo! I didn’t gain anything! …Wait…that’s not exactly the goal.

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 or 8 pack:
Last week: 45 3/4 inches
This week: 45 1/2 inches ….Uh…yeah. But heck, I’ll take it.

This is what I now look like sitting next to my son, Matthew:

Matthew and the Simpsons

I’m really going to have to step it up, this week…

Wednesday Weigh-In #1

Alright, I’m trying to hold myself accountable, here. So I’m going to start posting some ugly facts. Maybe it will inspire you to also put down the brownies and get off the couch.

The weigh-in:
Last week: 211 lbs.
This week: 209 lbs.! (-2)

Woo hoo! 2 pounds down and about 9 to go…

Turning the 20 pack into a 6 or 8 pack:
Ok, this is really embarassing. But my “resting” (no holding in) midsection is at 45 3/4 inches. Good grief. My belly button has an echo.

And now our community pool is taunting me…

What’s my fitness plan, you ask?

So far I have not been on a rigid schedule, but I have been intentional:

  1. Smaller portions.
  2. Very small desserts or skipping them altogether,
  3. Adding a bit more physical activity into my day (Parking farther out and doing more walking, running up the stairs, etc.)
  4. Drinking more water.
  5. Less sugar.
  6. Reading labels and actually thinking about “saturated fats” and how I’m on the road to becoming one myself… :)

That’s really about it. Obviously, that’s not enough to get where I need to be, but it is a start. It was tricky staying on course with lunch at Cici’s Pizza on Saturday and lunch at the Golden Coral on Sunday, however! I intend to add more intentional exercise and more fruits and vegetables this week. I’ll keep you posted.

I’ll do my best to post a “Wednesday Weigh-in” each week, good, bad or ugly. If I don’t post it, please hold me accountable and let me know about it…

Last week I mentioned that inspiration was provided by Carlos. This week I have to give a “shout out” to Charlie as a long distance motivator…

Anyone out there want to join me in setting a goal for fitness?

I turn around and there I am.

Two weeks ago, I decided I should lose some weight. So I set a casual goal of losing one pound in a week, did some extra walking and kept a lazy eye on what and how much I was eating.

A week later, my weight was different by one pound. Unfortunately, it was a pound I had gained, rather than lost! As of this morning, that number had climbed to two.

So I’ve decided that I had better get my “lazy eye” in gear soon or I won’t be able to fit into my contacts much longer. And my lazy “rest of me” also needs to get moving or I won’t be able to fit into anything else!

Losing about 10-15 pounds would make a huge difference.

I liked the carefree days of being able to tie my shoes without almost pulling my shoulder out of joint because my arms have to stretch over a wider circumference of waistline. It was nice not getting winded walking up the stairs and not having to inhale and do the watusi just to button my pants. I enjoyed sporting only one chin.

Just a little confession and accountability here. I gotta lose some weight. I’m thinking that surely I can drop at least a pound a week over the next 10 weeks.

I get serious in the morning. Anyone out there want to join me?

Inspiration provided by Carlos, but fear not. I’m too chicken (or vain) to post a video “shake test.” :)
