Qualifications of a Church Planter

Here are two lists…

List One:
• Entrepreneurial temperament
• Strong, personal evangelist
• History of starting things that grow
• Highly organized
• Excellent fundraising skills
• A leader of leaders
• Visionary
• Skilled communicator and teacher
• Self starter
• Hard worker
• Big risk taker
• Flexible
• Optimistic
• Good strategist
• Sacrificial
• Creative problem solver
• Team player
• History of being the main leader
• Called by God
• Willing to learn and develop necessary skills
• Willing to prepare

List Two:
• Called by God
• Willing to learn and develop necessary skills
• Willing to prepare

I hold with list two.

“List one” may contain characteristics of great church planters, but they are weak as “qualifications” for church planters.

In “list two,” item one is primary, and items two and three validate item one. In other words, if a person is not willing to learn and develop the necessary skills and is not willing to prepare then they are probably not called by God to plant a church.

“Church Planter” is not a “personality type.” “Church Planter” is what we call someone who has responded to God’s call to plant a church. The skills can be learned and the preparation can be made. They will either do it well or do it poorly.

Honestly, what qualifies you to do anything God asks you to do?

If He calls you to do it, then do it and become willing to let Him shape you into what He needs you to be to perform the task.
